(TargetLiberty.org) – The New Haven Yale Police Union has been handing incoming students a new public safety flyer that also features the image of a Grim Reaper to students who started arriving at the university campus this week.

City officials from New Haven as well as Yale have slammed the pamphlet which is claiming that crime rates in the city are worsening. The Yale Police Union and the University are currently in the process of negotiating contracts as Yale revealed in a statement. They further noted that the Police Union had handed the pamphlets which contained “disturbing and inflammatory rhetoric” regarding the safety in the area and was aiming at spreading fear among students and their families.

The flyer features statistics from the New Haven Police Department including information about the number of murders having been doubled, burglary rates increasing by 33 percent, and vehicle thefts by 56 percent.

The pamphlet then proceeds to wish the students luck and informs them that there were a few students at Yale who have managed to survive and not have any of their personal property stolen. The flyer also features several safety tips, including not being on the streets after 8 p.m., not walking alone, not taking public transport, and mainly remaining on the Yale campus.

Andrew Matthews, a spokesperson for the police union, justified the flyer by arguing that the data they provided are indisputable facts. He added that it was the union’s obligation to ensure that Yale students are aware of these crimes so that they can protect themselves while on campus.
