(TargetLiberty.org) – When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) ran for his position in 2018, he fully embraced then-President Donald Trump. He even ran a campaign ad that showed him reading a bedtime story to his kids about building a wall. Does all this mean DeSantis is the future of Trump’s movement?
There’s no doubt about it; Trump has influenced the GOP in a way the party hasn’t seen since a California movie star named Ronald Reagan hopped onto the political scene. A 2021 Economist/YouGov poll showed 36% of Republicans said Trump was the best president. Only 18% said it was Reagan, a shift from 2018 when 36% picked the ex-movie star and 10% chose the former president.
The greatest threat to Donald Trump’s hold on the GOP comes from his Florida neighbor, Governor Ron DeSantis, who may be more MAGA than the MAGA king himself. @jonathanchait writes https://t.co/VrQioBi34m

While Trump remains the face of the GOP, DeSantis has propelled himself into the national spotlight over the last couple of years because of his response to COVID-19 and how he is taking on the Left. In February, a straw poll at CPAC for the 2024 presidential race showed the former president is still wildly popular, but the Florida governor is right behind him.
The poll showed 59% of Conservatives want Trump to run while 28% support DeSantis. When the former president’s name wasn’t in the mix, 61% chose the Florida powerhouse.
DeSantis’ popularity leaves open the possibility that he could become the face of the MAGA movement in the future. However, all of it hinges on one thing: Will President Trump approve?
