(TargetLiberty.org) – With the start of the New Year, the House GOP is placing its attention on border issues as the Senate negotiations on the asylum policy continue to drag on. The conference is also starting the impeachment process against Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary.

On Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), will be heading to Eagle Pass, Texas with a group of Republicans. There are around 60 members of the party that are expected to join on the trip. The area of Eagle Pass is represented by Rep. Tony Gonzales (R). Other members of the party that are likely to join the trip include Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Greene (R-Tenn.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio.), the House Judiciary Committee Chair. Both of these men are going to play a central role in the impeachment efforts against Mayorkas.

Johnson has started becoming a lot more vocal about the situation at the Southern border which continues to be one of the central issues that the Republican party is focusing on as they try to win back the White House in 2024 and the Congress majorities.

In December, Johnson wrote a letter to President Biden pushing for him to use executive actions in order to handle the high number of border crossings and implement stricter immigration policies. He has also pushed the Biden administration to start back the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Last week, Johnson slammed the Biden administration over Mayorkas and Antony Blinken’s , the  Secretary of State, recent meeting with President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador, arguing that this development showed that the administration was not intent on solving the crisis at the border.
