(TargetLiberty.org) – Attackers who took over Twitter accounts belonging to Joe Biden, Barack Obama and at least a dozen more celebrities back in July didn’t even need to hack their way in, according to New York investigators. Instead, they simply called Twitter employees, pretended to be IT technicians, and asked for their login details – and, incredibly, the gullible staffers handed them over, giving the scammers access to the tech company’s internal tools.

Three men, two from Florida and one from the UK, were arrested in August for carrying out the attack. They’re being prosecuted in Florida because one of them, alleged to be the ringleader, is only 17, and Florida law makes it easier to charge him as an adult.
New York’s Department of Financial Services, which is investigating the case, says they don’t believe anyone at Twitter meant to help the attackers – in fact, some staff reported the calls as suspicious. However, they still blamed the $37-billion tech company for poor security procedures. Their report on the incident calls for stronger regulation of internet businesses to prevent future attacks.
