(TargetLiberty.org) – California’s ultra-liberal governor, Gavin Newsom (D) has signed a controversial new law that’ll force every student at California State University to take an ethnic studies course before being allowed to graduate. The university has resisted the move, calling it a “dangerous precedent for legislative interference” in what schools teach their students, but the state legislature rammed it through anyway.
Starting in the 2021-2022 academic year all undergraduates at Cal State’s 23 campuses will have to take a three-credit course focusing on four “racialized core groups”: African-, Asian- and Native-Americans, and Latinos. The irony is that Cal State had just developed its own ethnic studies requirement that covers a much wider range of ethnic groups, including Jewish-Americans. This will now be overruled by the requirement imposed by Sacramento.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday requiring all 430,000 California State University undergraduates to take ethnic studies, a notable rebuke to the university’s governing board, which had passed its own, much broader requirement last month. https://t.co/OIL1OyBaMX

Over 480,000 students are enrolled in the Cal State system, 430,000 of them undergrads. The state legislature estimates their ethnic studies mandate will cost around $16 million to implement – money the cash-strapped state could spend on more productive things.
