(TargetLiberty.org) – Since November’s election campaign, there’s been increasing criticism of social media platforms, with many Conservatives – and even some Liberals – saying the sites are creating echo chambers and helping polarize American society. Now it seems the pressure is having an effect, as Facebook announces plans to reduce its political content.
On February 2, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told stockholders the company is working on technology that will make political groups and discussions something users have to ‘opt in’ to participate. He said user feedback shows that people are fed up with the amount of politics on Facebook, complaining that it “takes over their experience.”
“The decision about what is or isn't political is a very political decision in and of itself,” says @evan_greer. “… a local veterans group? … a local anti-war group? … an LGBTQ support group? … Frankly, all of those things are political.” https://t.co/nbLNvjMm8c

Zuckerberg is saying all the right things, but it’s hard to say just yet what kind of effect this development will have on political free speech in the future. On Monday, Project Veritas leaked a video showing Zuckerberg praising President Biden’s attacks on the achievements of the Trump administration. So far, the platform’s enforcement efforts have focused on right-wing groups. Is Facebook really going to start cleaning up its platform policies, or is this just a front for even more censorship?
