DOJ Charges People With Alleged Health Care Fraud

(TargetLiberty.org) – An additional 14 people have been arrested on federal charges linked to healthcare fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic. The suspects were involved in multiple scams that netted at least $143 million in illegal payouts.

On May 26, the Department of Justice’s fraud section announced it was prosecuting cases in six different states, after investigators identified 14 medical fraudsters. The suspects include a doctor, pharmacists, laboratory owners and a home health agency. All of them are accused of exploiting the pandemic to scam consumers and insurance companies out of millions of dollars. One scam involved offering COVID tests to senior citizens, then claiming insurance payouts for other – more expensive – tests on the samples. Another charged insurers for online consultations that never happened.

FBI Director Christopher Wray called it “disheartening” that some medical staff have abused their positions to defraud people. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said the DOJ is determined to punish medical fraudsters “to the fullest extent of the law.”
