(TargetLiberty.org) – Florida Governor DeSantis (Republican) has criticized the “weaponization of federal law enforcement” following former President Trump’s announcement that he was being indicted in connection to the classified documents.

In his tweet, DeSantis stated that the weaponization of law enforcement was a great threat to society and that in the past few years, the law has frequently been applied differently based on the person’s political affiliation. While he did not outright defend Trump, he did question why the federal government had been so insistent in pursuing Trump while not doing a lot to pursue Hillary Clinton or Hunter Biden.

His message finished with him claiming that if he wins the White House he is going to “bring accountability” to the Justice Department and will stop the department’s weaponization for good.

DeSantis’ comments came after Trump recently announced that his attorneys had been informed that he would be indicted in connection to the investigation into his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021. Following Trump’s announcement many Republican presidential contenders put out statements discussing the federal indictment.

DeSantis’ statement in particular came only a few hours after Trump announced that he would be indicted in connection to this case. Previously, when Trump had been criminally indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), DeSantis had taken days before releasing a statement addressing the charges.  At the time he had criticized Bragg stating that he was a “Soros-funded prosecutor.”

DeSantis is considered Trump’s biggest opposition in the 2024 Republican primary.
