(TargetLiberty.org) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and some of the progressives in his party are disagreeing over the border policy negotiations.
On Friday, a number of Senators, including Sens. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and James Lankford, R-Okla., as well as Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., met with Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and White House officials to continue the negotiations over the border policies. However, the discussions did not move well according to some of the Democratic senators who are concerned about the number of concessions being made by the Democratic party.
Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., took to X, formerly known as Twitter on Thursday to point out that Schumer had believed that he would get the Senators to return home over the weekend and agree to the GOP’s anti-immigrant demands while people were not paying attention. He added that he had attempted to ambush them in order to receive the necessary yes votes, but as he argued Schumer had been “terribly mistaken.
Menendez, who is facing federal bribery charges, argued that the Democrats, including Schumer who were considering these proposals, would need to understand that the “Trumpian policies” were not going to work in addressing the situation at the border, and would most likely only make the problem worse. He added that immigration advocates needed to speak up.
Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., similarly stated that what the Democrats were hearing was “concerning.”
