(TargetLiberty.org) – House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) praised the recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court regarding presidential immunity while also calling for the ideological left to continue upholding “democratic values.” The presidential immunity case could affect the federal election interference case against President Donald Trump in connection to the 2020 presidential election.
On Monday Jordan argued in a statement that “hyper-partisan prosecutors” such as special counsel Jack Smith could not use the law to go after the chief political rival of their administration. He noted that they hoped that the left was going to stop the attack on Trump. He added that the Judiciary Committee is going to continue overseeing the judicial system’s dangerous lawfare tactics.
On that same day in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that U.S. presidents are granted “presumptive immunity” from being prosecuted for official acts. This is a hit on the case brought forward by Smith. The election interference case is now going to be brought back to the D.C. District Court, where they previously had to pause the proceedings because of Trump’s immunity claims.
However, even under this recent ruling, there is still the possibility that Trump will be prosecuted for the pressure campaign he put on former Vice President Mike Pence as he was attempting to have him alter the results of the election.
Many Democrats have reacted strongly to the decision accusing the Supreme Court of displaying partisanship, while others have expressed concerns about the future of democracy in the U.S.
