(TargetLiberty.org) – On Sunday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) compared a possible second term in the White House for former President Donald Trump to the presidency of Vladimir Putin in Russia, as well as other authoritarian leaders around the world. Raskin’s comments were made after the recent remarks by Trump where he threatened that during a second term in office, he would prosecute his political opponents.
During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki,” Raskin argued that Trump believed that the role of government was for him to “advance his political fortunes” and go after his political rivals. He added that Trump’s second term in office would most likely be incredibly similar to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s time in office. He pointed out that this was going to be a democracy that did not have liberties, and rights or follow the rule of law.
Raskin, who had belonged to the special House select committee tasked with investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack and the involvement of Trump in the attack, also claimed that such countries had leaders that would not respect results that did not benefit them, including elections that did not go the way they wanted them to go.
Raskin also pointed out that they refused to “disavow political violence” and instead embraced it and used it as a tool for gaining more power. All of this was something that they managed through having a charismatic political leader, which is exactly what they would consider Trump to be.
