(TargetLiberty.org) – Many House Democrats have signed a letter pushing for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from the immunity case relating to the federal indictment against former President Donald Trump in connection to his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
On Monday, the Hill obtained a letter in which the Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Jamie Raskin (Md.), Hank Johnson (Ga.), and Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas) had pushed for Thomas to “recuse” himself from this case. The letter was also signed by other Reps, including Jasmine Crockett (Texas), Madeleine Dean (Pa.), Dan Goldman (N.Y.), and Gerry Connolly (Va.).
Johnson, who wrote the letter along with the other members, serves on the Judiciary committee.
Last week, Senate Democrats had written and sent a letter to Thomas with a similar message pushing for him to recuse himself from the case.
These letters came after a request from Special Counsel Jack Smith, who asked the country’s highest court to consider whether Trump should be granted complete immunity from federal prosecution for any of the crimes that he might have committed while he was serving in office, or whether being impeached but not convicted protects him constitutionally from federal prosecution being launched against him.
In their letter from Dec. 15, the House Democrats pointed out that Ginni Thomas, the wife of the Supreme Court justice, was an active supporter of the false claims of the former President that the 2020 election had been stolen from him. Last year, she had reiterated those claims in front of the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack.
