(TargetLiberty.org) – On Friday, CNN anchor Jake Tapper spoke about the appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in Hunter Biden’s investigation. As he pointed out there were certain questions that have arisen from the decision to have Weiss named special counsel, which is why the concerns expressed by the Republicans about this appointment “have merit.”
Weiss was already the federal prosecutor who had handled the investigation into Hunter Biden in Delaware. Last month, as part of the investigation he announced a plea deal over Biden’s tax evasion charges. Many GOP members blasted the deal calling it a “sweetheart agreement.”
On Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced during a press conference in Washington, D.C., that Weiss was going to be the special counsel handling the federal investigation into Hunter Biden, and would be the authority in any charging decisions.
James Comer, R-Ky., the chairman of the House Oversight Committee in a statement blasted the appointment claiming that this was part of the Department of Justice’s general efforts to cover up the Biden family’s business schemes as more evidence has arisen that they had received payments from foreign national in exchange for influence.
During a segment on “CNN News Central,” Tapper argued that there were legitimate questions that related to this situation, especially as normally a special counsel is an external attorney. There have been cases where that is not the case, but still, the appointment of Weiss is “odd.” He also argued that it did not make a lot of sense for Weiss, who had failed with the Hunter Biden plea deal, to be brought in as special counsel.
