China Discourages Abortions, Boosts Child Services To Promote Birth Rate

China In PANIC MODE – Issues New Emergency Measures

( – For decades, China’s communist regime used abortion to enforce its brutal “one child” policy. Now, faced with a plummeting birth rate, it’s realized how big a mistake it made and is rushing to change course. But is it already too late?

As reported by International Business Times, an August 16 announcement by China’s National Health Authority signals a reversal of the country’s long-running birth control policies. From 1970 to 2015, most Chinese families were only allowed a single child. The result was predictable — the country’s birth rate collapsed to far below replacement level. The child limit was relaxed over the last few years, and finally abandoned last year, but the damage had already been done. To maintain a stable population, a country needs a fertility rate of 2.1 births per woman; in 2021 China’s fertility rate was just 1.16.

According to Tuesday’s announcement, the Chinese government will spend more on child care, education, and housing to encourage families to have more children. The big change, though, wa-s that the country will now officially discourage abortions — after carrying out an estimated 9.5 million procedures between 2015 and 2019. Will this be enough to turn China’s population decline around? The country’s strict COVID lockdowns have kept the fertility rate low despite the easing of the one-child policy.

Will the new abortion rules make a difference when women aren’t getting pregnant anyway?
