( – On Friday, former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who had been on duty during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack, announced that he would be joining the Congressional race in Maryland.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that came only a day before the three-year anniversary of the attack, Dunn noted that he had previously defended the country on January 6 from the rioters. He added that for his service he had been honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Joe Biden. Now, he would be running for Congress in order to block former President Donald Trump and his supporters from ever taking such actions again.

The 40-year-old former Capitol Police officer had served in the force for 15 years and had stepped down a few weeks prior to the announcement that he would be running for Congress. He is the latest addition in the crowded Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District. The seat is currently held by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) who announced in October that he would not try to seek reelection.

The campaign announcement video has Dunn walking down a hallway that resembles the Capitol and talking to the camera. While he is walking there are actors who are pretending to be rioters causing destruction while the date “Jan. 6” is present on the screen. Dunn proceeds to say that on that day he had been on duty as a Capitol Police officer and that he had been called to protect Congress members, who he knew to be bigots, in order to protect the country’s democracy. As he argued he put the country above everyone else on that day, but that many others had not done the same.
