(TargetLiberty.org) – It looks like California’s fondness for “sanctuary cities” has just come back to bite its Democrat state government. A mayor has announced that, as of now, his city is a refuge for businesses that want to reopen and help get the economy moving again. Atwater Mayor Paul Creighton says the city’s cops and code inspectors won’t be enforcing Governor Gavin Newsom’s shelter-in-place orders anymore.

Creighton told Fox News that California “…has a sanctuary city for everything…,” calling out other cities’ tolerance of everything from drug use to homelessness; now he’s made Atwater into a sanctuary for American workers who just want to get back to earning a wage. “We smashed the curve here in Merced County and we’re doing our part,” he said, pointing out that the county had passed the peak of the coronavirus epidemic days before the state did – and that Atwater is one of the least affected places in the county.
It’s not clear how Newsom will respond to this defiance. So far the state Alcohol Beverage Control is reported to have threatened Atwater businesses. However, it looks like Creighton has the city’s job creators on his side so far.
