Bus Hijacked at Gunpoint

(TargetLiberty.org) – A hero bus driver helped prevent a potential tragedy in New York City. His bus was hijacked in Queens early Thursday morning, but he managed to let the passengers off and then escape. The hijacker is now under arrest.

Around 7:30 a.m. on October 27, a man, later identified as Dwayne Gaddy, boarded an MTA bus in Cambria Heights, Queens. He sat down behind the driver, blocking his exit from the driving compartment, then ordered him at gunpoint to drive off. However, the driver responded by opening all the exit doors on the bus and urging the approximately two dozen passengers to get off, which they did. He then drove the bus for around 30 blocks. Finally, he seized the chance to jump out through his side window, leaving the hijacker alone. Gaddy took control of the bus himself, but only made it around one block before he crashed into a utility pole.

Gaddy has now been arrested and faces charges of reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment, weapon possession, and menacing. He also had to be treated for minor injuries received in the crash. His weapon was recovered from the bus and turned out to be a BB gun. NYPD Deputy Chief Jerry O’Sullivan said, “It definitely could have been a lot worse… I believe the driver was calm and did a great job.”
