(TargetLiberty.org) – On Monday, a migrant child died while in U.S. custody leading to a medical investigation conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) being opened up according to officials. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that the news of the death was “deeply saddening” adding that “our hearts go out to the family.”

The medical investigation started on May 10. An HHS spokesperson further verified that local law enforcement and Florida’s Department of Children and Families have been notified and that the case was going to be thoroughly reviewed by the HHS Division of Health for Unaccompanied Children.

Jean-Pierre did not reveal whether President Biden was going to be speaking to the child’s family, adding that she had not talked with the President about this incident. However, what she did add was that this was devastating news for someone who is a mother and is going to celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday.

The Department of Health and Human Services verified the death to Fox News. According to reports the child, a boy, had been in the department’s custody for months having traveled from Honduras. The child died only a few days after Title 42 expired. Following the expiration, officials have been pushing back stating that the border was not open prior to the pandemic era policy.

On Friday, officials stated that they might have seen a slight increase in the number of migrants at the southern border following the Title’s expiration, but that asylum workers would need to work over the weekend to help clear process claims.
