Biden White House Accuses China of Threatening US Cybersecurity

(TargetLiberty.org) – The Biden administration has been forced to take another step back from its conciliatory attitude to China, with the president now openly accusing the Beijing regime of protecting cybercriminals.

On July 19, President Biden told reporters China is “worse than Russia on cybercrime because they are accommodating the crimes.” It’s a turnaround for the Democrat leader, who was often critical of former President Donald Trump’s tough line with the Communist dictatorship, but Beijing’s increasingly aggressive behavior doesn’t leave him much choice.

Recently, Chinese hackers carried out a series of attacks on American businesses; in April, a hack of Microsoft Exchange Server systems affected over 30,000 servers in the US. The hackers aren’t government agents, but the governments of Russia and China turn a blind eye to their activities as long as they target western countries. Now, Biden has hinted that China goes beyond simple tolerance, and is enabling the criminals. As well as protecting the hackers, the president said on Monday, China is “maybe even accommodating them being able to do it.”

So far, though, all we’re getting from Biden is words. Russia has already been sanctioned for tolerating hackers, but China hasn’t faced any actual consequences. Representative John Katko (R-NY), ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, says the administration has failed to hold China to account. “The only thing bad guys understand is strength,” he warned. Will our president manage to show any?
