(TargetLiberty.org) – The First Amendment of the Constitution protects Americans from laws that could violate their right to freedom of speech. The government isn’t supposed to ever silence Americans. Recently, that’s what President Joe Biden asked the media and Big Tech to do.
On January 13, the President gave a COVID-19 update to the American people. He concluded his remarks by asking the media and social media platforms to stop the spread of disinformation and misinformation. He asked media members to stop inviting guests who allegedly spread lies about the virus. The President also said tech platforms should stop the spread of the information.

Biden’s remarks were alarming because he isn’t supposed to make statements encouraging the suppression of free speech. While he isn’t making laws or policies technically violating the First Amendment, his comments do seem to fall in a gray area. One could argue he’s using the power of his office to appeal to private companies to silence Americans with whom he disagrees.
If the commander-in-chief can use his bully pulpit to stop people from speaking out, he’s essentially using a loophole to get around the Constitution.
