(TargetLiberty.org) The Biden administration is preparing to introduce new immigration rules which would block many migrants from seeking asylum in the country. Many groups have compared the new Biden rules to similar Trump-era rules that sought to restrict immigration. Most groups have also expressed that they would work to block the rules from taking effect.

Four senior DHS officials have stated that the new rules are going to be announced within the next few weeks. These new rules would block asylum seekers from seeking asylum if they had not previously requested asylum from one of the other countries that they crossed on their way to the United States. If no other attempts for asylum were made, then those migrants will automatically be ineligible for asylum. As most migrants have to pass through at least one country, Mexico, before reaching the U.S. this could affect hundreds of migrants.

The Biden administration is trying to deal with the large influx of migrants who have been crossing into the U.S. seeking asylum. As a result, the administration has introduced other pathways for migrants to legally enter the U.S.

Immigration advocates and some Democrats have slammed the Biden administration for this policy, which is similar to the transit ban that had been proposed during the Trump administration and was blocked through court action.

Keren Zwick, director of litigation at the National Immigrant Justice Center, has said that her group was going to work to fight against the introduction of any such rule. She also claimed that this rule would never be able to withstand a legal challenge.
