Barrett Hearings Open With Dem Focus on Trump, Obamacare

( – The Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing with Judge Amy Coney Barrett began on Monday, October 12, in what was supposed to be a balanced, objective review of the Supreme Court nominee’s fitness for the job. Instead, it turned into a Democrat assault on President Trump, with a generous side of complaints about healthcare reforms.

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) was one of the main culprits, accusing the president and congressional Republicans of using the Supreme Court to “do their dirty work” on Obamacare. The administration will be arguing for the repeal of the socialized medicine program on November 10.

Harris was joined by Chris Coons (D-DE), who told Barrett her confirmation would have “dramatic and potentially very harmful consequences,” and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) who claimed Barrett could do “explosive, enduring harm” and called on her to recuse herself.

Barrett, however, came back with a vigorous defense of her independence. Citing her mentor, Justice Anton Scalia, she said, “A judge must apply the law as written, not as the judge wishes it were.”

The Dems are determined to block her confirmation, but she isn’t going to be a pushover.
